I started promoting my beauty business with a Facebook page, the work wasn’t overwhelming, until I launched an online store, early last year, by name ShopCares, on WooCommerce. I can still remember the day, it was 2019 Valentine’s Day evening.

At last! I settled for WooCommerce after I’d tried other e-commerce platforms like PrestaShop, OpenCart, Magento and the likes. When I couldn’t wrap my head around most of them, I sought advice from my programmer friends, and they all advised I start with WordPress.

Before I launched the site, often, I find myself awake at night, sourcing themes, editing codes I barely understood and writing product descriptions. My head ached, my eyes were strained and my PC finally crashed.

Sometimes I forget to eat and when things doesn’t work out the way I wanted them to, I’d lose appetite for food, uninstall everything, only to start from the beginning again.

At a point, I was like ‘Is this what it takes to set up an eCommerce store and start your own business?’

I realized that, this is what other entrepreneurs go through, especially when starting from scratch, with a low budget that cannot hire a pro. In my case, I had a little knowledge of it, because I’d set up a shop page on Life With Tee, yet I still faced those challenges.

The truth is most of us mistreat or neglect ourselves, while trying, to take care of our business(es), we forget to take care of ourselves as well.

I don’t know about you, but I cannot boast of having a smooth, and productive day, if I didn’t get enough sleep. If I had un/intentionally deprived myself of sleep at night, the rest of the day’s work suffers.

What does that mean? We are not doing ourselves, or our businesses any favour; by not taking proper care of ourselves, hence, the need to write these self-care tips for entrepreneurs to boost productivity.

If I ask you, do you take care of yourself? Your answer will definitely be “Yes”, you might even think, “what sort of question is that? Of course I take care of myself”. And if I go on to ask “how do you care for yourself?”, that’s where you would start to think deeply.

What is self-care?

Self-care is any necessary activity that we carry out intentionally or deliberately, self-initiated acts in order to take care of our emotional, mental and physical health. It looks simple to carry out, but we often overlook it.

Maintaining self-care means keeping certain habits that improves well-being, preserves health and wellness, or maintains physical and emotional stability. Self-care maintenance behaviours include illness prevention and behaviours.

In summary, self-care is the key to living a balanced life. I know this life no balance sha.

8 Self-care Tips for Entrepreneurs to Boost Productivity

Don’t let anyone deceive you, entrepreneurship is hard, so damn hard. That’s the reason, while I’m discussing about personal finance, and making money, I also talk about managing stress, coping with fatigue and also dish out self-care tips for entrepreneurs.

Self-care ensures you are equipped emotionally, mentally, and physically to handle the hurdles of your small business. I used to argue that I don’t have the time and money for self-care, but, do not drink from that cup, cause I’ve realized that the effects of not taking care of yourself is often felt thereafter, and the price is usually higher.

Inasmuch as you are investing in your business, you should also invest in yourself; by practicing proper self-care. I have put together 8 quick self-care tips for entrepreneurs to boost productivity.

  1. Sleep early
  2. Have a calendar or planner
  3. Live your life now
  4. Keep journals
  5. Wake up early
  6. Learn to say no
  7. Reduce your stress
  8. Take deep breaths

1. Sleep Early

Get adequate sleep to function properly. Adults usually need 6 – 8 hours of sleep each night. It is advised that, you go to bed earlier in the night and wake up early each morning. This may not work for everyone especially those who work best at night – the night owls. I feel getting enough and quality sleep is far more important.

2. Calendar/Planner

Self-care is something you deliberately plan and not just expecting it to happen. Make it a habit to write out your schedule for self-care maintenance, add the activities to your calendar and get a life planner. You should also have an accountability partner, this will help you to increase commitment.

3. Live Your Life Now

Living your life now means you no longer worry about what happened yesterday, neither are you afraid of what will happen tomorrow. That means you are able to let go of the past, yes, do not dwell on past accomplishments. Be conscious and aware that every second that pass is a gift. Learn to smile, forgive past hurts and stop worrying. Problems no dey finish.

Live in the present and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering.

4. Keep Journals

A journal is a record of your thoughts and experiences. If you are the type of person that loves to write, you will enjoy keeping a journal, it can help you to deal with difficult emotions, for instance, dealing with a difficult client or customer as an entrepreneur.

Keeping a journal will help organize your thoughts, in your personal and professional life. The processes involved in journaling are critical to not only being a successful entrepreneur but also a happier person.

5. Wake Early

One important benefit of waking early is that it helps you organize your day properly, it reduces stress level and helps you to start your day with an optimistic mindset and with such positivity, you are most definitely going to have a productive day.

6. Learn To Say No

Most new business owners struggle to say no, for fear of losing a client. We spend a lot of time running after opportunities, and when were presented with one, it could be hard to turn down.

Cause we’re always optimistic and ready to try out new things, just to discover which really works, especially at the early stage, when you’re worried about getting a client, any client at all. You feel you should grab any opportunity that comes by the neck, it could be an opportunity to boost your business and you can go any length to get it.

At this point, I understand you want to say yes to everything, but that isn’t right, it’s not even productive. There are clients who are out to ruin you. Yes, when a client is pricing a product less than the cost of production, that client wants you to go backrupt.

You can say a big fat NO to such clients. But, there’s always a way, and when to say no without sounding rude as an entrepreneur.

7. Reduce Your Stress

This is one of the self-care tips for entrepreneur that many do not follow. You should find ways to reduce stress in your life and you start by knowing the cause of your stress. Once you’re conscious of those activities that stresses you out, you will be in a better position to address it.

8. Deep Breaths

This is the last but the easiest. Breathing is a natural activity, you don’t have to think about it, right? But, how you breathe matters.

Breathe in slowly. Let it out. Take your time. Do not rush. Repeat this as much as you can for some time.

You will notice that as your lungs get fresh flow of oxygen, you will feel the stress leave you slowly. This is a way of letting go of tension and giving yourself a chance to relax your mind. This can be done even in the middle of a tedious work.

Don’t get too busy that you forget to breathe, life is just one.
