But have you ever sat back to think why April 1 was set aside to play harmless pranks on people?

I remember when I was growing up I had been told different stories about why today was called April fools day, apart from those stories, I have read some excerpts on why today was set aside as well which I’m gladly going to share with you here.

Let us go back to the time of Noah and the ark.

According to Bertha McDonald in Harper’s Weekly, the origin of April Fools Day had meticulously explained a theory that Noah had mistakenly sent the dove out of the ark before the water had diminished.

On the first of April and to keep this memory going it was thought that whoever forgot such a memorial circumstance be punished by being sent out on some sleeveless errand similar to that of which the dove was sent by Noah.

Another story has it that in the Middle Ages, New year’s day was been celebrated on April 1 but it was shifted to January 1 while most people still believed it was April 1.

These set of people were then referred to as ‘April Fools’ by those who accepted to keep January 1 as New year’s day.

In 1508, French poet Eloy d’Amerval referred to a poisson d’avril (April fool, literally “Fish of April).

In France, April 1 is marked in a unique way.  It was written of a Nobleman who sent his servants on foolish errands on April 1.

Nigeria isn’t left out of the countries celebrating this day, with many playing awkward pranks on one another.
